Conveniently, and a rarity in St Andrews, North Star has free on-street parking immediately in front on the house and there is also a private walled garden at the rear for children to play in the playhouse and on the swing/slide and for sizzling up prime Scottish beef burgers and steaks on the Weber BBQ.
Guests have been gushing in their praise of Shona, the owner and BFB especially approve of her ‘baby go lightly’ approach to providing bulky kit and caboodle so parents don’t have to cram it in the car – (everything from feeding pillow to bouncer chair, playmat with activity arch to bjorn carrier, monitor to steriliser are included). Children will be delighted to discover a cupboard full of toys to play with and the apartment has the latest home entertainment gadgetry including TVs with DVD players in all three bedrooms as well as the lounge which also has Sky TV, a Sonos Music system and free unlimited Wi Fi for playing or browsing on tablets. A telephone is provided for incoming and outgoing landline calls at no extra cost and babysitting can be arranged.
There is a playhouse and swing / slide set as well as boules and giant jenga in the enclosed, private garden and buckets and spades are provided for days on the beach.
The living room, dining area and kitchen at North Star, with its solid oak flooring and exposed beamed ceiling, is a bright, open plan space for families to chill out after days at the beach and for making mealtimes all part of the quality time together. The newly installed kitchen naturally has all the latest appliances, as well as baby crockery and cutlery, plus little luxuries including Joseph Joseph accessories, Tassimo coffee machine and Denby crockery. Comfy beds with 100% Egyptian cotton linen and original working shutters providing blackout are conducive to good nights’ sleep, plus fluffy towels and cotton dressing gowns are included as well as Scottish Fine Soaps toiletries in the spotless tiled bathrooms.
North Star is an apartment for up to 6 people plus two babies, with 1 wooden cot and 1 travel cot available. The three bedrooms are on the first floor of the Georgian town house, comprising 1 double bedroom with an ensuite shower room, 1 king-sized bedroom and 1 with twin single beds, all with their own TV/DVD player and space for a cot. The tiled family bathroom has a bath with a shower overhead, washbasin, WC and a heated towel rail. A balcony on the first floor has seating and overlooks the garden. The open plan living room, dining area and kitchen is on the second floor, with the windows overlooking the garden. The newly installed kitchen includes an oven, hob, eye-level microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher, Tassimo coffee machine, Dualit toaster, steriliser, plastic crockery and cutlery. A contemporary dining table extends and two highchairs, plus a child’s dining chair and Bumbo seat with a tray are provided. There is a pair of three seater sofas in the living area as well as stylish touches such as the Arne Jacobsen Egg chair and Eames kids table and 2 chairs. There is also a 50” widescreen digital TV with Sky channels and Soundbar, a Sonos music system, DVD/CD player, a cupboard full of toys and a selection of books and DVDs. North Star’s secure walled garden where children can play and also has a dining table for up to 8 people and a Weber barbecue, as well as playhouse and swing / slide set. The laundry room houses the washing machine and tumble dryer. There is free parking on the road immediately in front of the house. Dogs are welcome.
North Star and Scribbles Apartments are tucked away in a quiet residential street at the heart of the exclusive seaside town of St Andrews, 50 miles North East of Edinburgh. The shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants of this vibey university town are just a short stroll away, as well as the pretty harbour, between two superb sandy beaches. St Andrews is steeped in history and has numerous claims to fame, from its world renowned Royal and Ancient Golf Club to its prestigious medieval university where Prince William fell for Kate Middleton. Even one of the beaches, the vast West Sands, was where the iconic opening sequence for Chariots of Fire was filmed.
A fun way to explore St Andrews is picking up one of the town’s Treasure Trails, with a pirate, spy or mystery theme, which guides families from clue to clue around the town’s main sights. When the Scottish weather does its worse, there’s the East Sands Leisure Centre in St Andrews with sloping beach-style access to the pool, tropical palm trees, flume slides and inflatable assault course. St Andrews Aquarium is another winner for families, not only introducing children to the wonders of the deep but also home to penguins, seals, meerkats and creepy crawlies.
Just outside St Andrews (5 minutes drive), Craigtoun Country Park has plenty to keep children happy, including an adventure playground, super bouncy trampolines, bouncy castle, crazy golf, pedal cars, a family cafe and one of Scotland's oldest miniature railways. By exploring this corner of Scotland know as the East Neuk of Fife, families will also find traditional fishing villages with arty residents, traditional taverns full of character and characters, exceptional fish and chip shops and superb seafood restaurants.
