BFB's Overview

This former 18th century traditional Breton Longhouse has been lovingly converted into three stylish yet characterful cottages sleeping from 4 to 23 and sharing two acres of lawned gardens plus a large heated outdoor swimming pool with a new telescopic cover, making it a comfortable temperature year-round whether the roof is on or off.

Run by Susan, a British mum of two little ones who's been in France for over a decade, the cluster of cottages are well set up for young families with a host of useful nursery gear and a handy collection of toys for inside and out (see grey box below). Those guests who can drag their off spring away from the heated outdoor pool, trampoline and ride-ons provided, find the cottages conveniently located with several towns and villages within a few minutes drive or a 15 minute cycle (bikes and child seats available) - ideal for early morning boulangerie runs! Plus, the beaches of France's 'Emerald Coast' are all within 45minutes drive.

Les Alouettes (sleeps 6-8) is a pretty three bedroom stone cottage, with two bathrooms (2xshowers & 1x bath). This spacious cottage is ideal for a family plus grandparents with two double bedrooms (king-sized beds), one of which is located on the ground floor, plus a large tripe bedroom with three single beds on the first floor. There is a bathroom, with bath and separate shower located on the ground floor, plus a second shower room/w.c on the first floor. The kitchen is equipped with a large fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave, along with the usual gear i.e. hob, oven, kettle, toaster etc. The lounge has TV (English and French) with Freeview (includes Cbeebies), DVD, VCR and WiFi internet access. Outside there is a private terrace and dining area, complete with wooden garden furniture and barbecue. The cottage has an open fire (guard provided) and electric Acova radiators, which ensure it is a cosy retreat any time of year.

Location Information

The cottages at La Haute Mancelière are just 45 minutes drive from the long sandy beaches of the Emerald coast between St Malo and Cancale, which, along with the buckets and spades provided make for a great family day out. St Malo's medieval walled city is crammed with lovely boutiques and bistros, whilst its Grand Aquarium makes a great wet weather retreat for Finding Nemo fans!

Wannabe princesses or brave knights will love Fougères, only 15kms away, which boasts the largest medieval castle in Europe.

Closer to home the surrounding countryside offers many lovely walks and cycle rides, many through established forests which characterize the countryside of the Fougères region. Bikes for both adults and children can be provided should you fancy a family excursion. However its not just about the kids, there are at least 4 golf couses within a 45 minute drive of the property for golf enthusiasts and a fishing lake close by for anyone wishing to catch fresh trout for the barbecue!

The nearest village Tremblay (4kms away) is both beautiful and useful with its 11th century church and a range of shops, bars and restaurants. St Brice-en-Cogles, a slightly larger village, the same distance away and has a handy supermarket.

For eating out, there's an excellent 'Ferme Auberge' restaurant 5kms away, which is super child friendly, very relaxed with excellent, good value, food and lots of animals to see in between courses.

The forest of Villecartier (a 10 minute drive) which as well as offering many different walks has electronic boats and pony rides. If all that isn't enough there is a wonderful zoo nearby which is perfect for budding animal lovers.

Nearest Medical: A&E 15kms, Local Doctors 5kms - owner Sarah is happy to make doctors appointments and go to the surgery to translate, if needed.

Who owns this place?

I fell in love with France during many school holidays spent there as a child, and decided that one day I would like to live there. I worked hard on learning French at school, had a memorable internship on a campsite in France for 6 months which taught me a lot about the hospitality business and then started a career in IT logistics. A gîte holiday in 2001 re awakened my passion and I took the plunge in 2002 and moved to La Haute Manceliere in Eastern Brittny with my then 18 month old daughter. A lot of time, effort, passion then went into creating a successful little gîte business which has welcomed people from all over the world and best of all, a lot of visitors who return.
My aim has been to create a home from home with the accommodation offered. Every gîte retains its original character and comfort is a priority – from good mattresses to a well equipped kitchen and a properly heated swimming pool. The garden is one of the most important features of my gites – it can be accessed directly from the back door of every gite and it is a safe haven for children to explore, play and make new friends. In my experience if the children are happy, the parents are happy!

What do they love about it?

I love living in Brittany, and in a rural location far from the hustle and bustle of city life. I love the birds singing, the freedom to step out of my house into the beautiful countryside and walk or run for as long as I want. When I was younger I worked a lot in the hospitality industry and I love being a host, making sure everything is as perfect as possible for guests and providing impeccable accommodation. I have two children and having travelled with them when they were younger I think I anticipate very well what young families want, need and expect in accommodation away from home. I love where I live and can recommend beaches, restaurants, visits to suit all ages and tastes.

What do the kids love about it?

Children love it here because they can run, play, make friends in total security. My cottages are located in a quiet hamlet, with a large communal garden with swings, slide, trampoline and most importantly a covered fenced heated pool. The pool is properly heated to 28°C so it is fantastic for babies and always comfortable for adults to swim in too. I have horrible memories of supposedly 'heated' pools which were cold - mine is not like that and there is the advantage of the all weather cover. Children love making friends and because I have 3 cottages there are always other children staying (as well as my own!). We are close to the ferry ports, so there are no long car journeys which young children dislike. The climate in Brittany isn't so hot that it makes it impossible to be outdoors all day. And here in Eastern Brittany the climate is much drier than the west coast. There are lots of attractions locally for families, although most children who stay prefer to play in the garden or swim in the pool. If it rains there are toys in the cottages, along with DVDs for children.

  • We all had a lovely holiday. We loved the pool and the huge garden. There was a lot to do in the local area and Susan could not have been more helpful. Would recommend a visit.Review dated 19/05/2014

  • We had an excellent time, this was ideal for young children. Despite being in the middle of nowhere it is easy to get everywhere. We stayed in Les Chouettes the main house which was great for a group of around 8-10 people.Review dated 17/06/2013

  • Fantastic property and a very attentive owner. It had everything needed for young children and babies and the pool and bikes are a great addition. We have a great family holiday and would highly recommend to others.Review dated 17/10/2012

  • Fabulous holiday location with great facilities. The pool, grounds and free access to bicycles really added to the overall experience. Lots to see and do in the local areas so 2 weeks passed really quickly. A great place to unwind and spend quality time as a family.Review dated 27/09/2012

  • We had a really wonderful time at this property in May 2012. The outdoor space and facilities are a particular strength (and made entertaining our 18-month-old son very easy!) but inside the cottage was spacious and comfortable and the owner couldn't have been more helpful both before and during our stay. There was plenty to do in the surrounding area in spite of less-than-perfect weather. We definitely hope to return!Review dated 14/09/2012

  • We had a wonderful stay with our toddler at this very comfortable cottage - extremely wel equipped (right down to black-out blinds in the bedrooms) and Susan was only too happy to help with queries before and during our stay. The outside space and play equipment is a particular bonus, but we were very well provided for on rainy days too, and there was plenty to do in the surrounding area. Definitely hope to return!Review dated 29/08/2012

  • We stayed in the 3 bed property - not safe to let kids out the front as directly on to road for hamlet, no direct access to garden area (only through side door, so werent able to keep an eye on kids who may have been just inside when we were on patio area), no opening window in ground floor bedroom, so very hot, and staircase not very child friendly. Overall, very disappointing.Review dated 22/08/2012

In fact, we have high numbers of repeat guests who have always commented favourably on the facilities, equipment and overall comfort compared to other French cottages they have stayed in. Regarding the "dated interiors", Les Alouettes is a 200-year-old rural French cottage, which was renovated a while ago, but which is redecorated and refurbished regularly. The sofas, the bed linen and most of the bedroom furniture are Ikea, which may not be to everyone's taste, but is far from dated. • Lovely cottage in a great location. Peacful and quiet but close to everything. Everything 'baby friendly' was thought of and even though we couldn't use the exterior facilites (due to Jan visit). We would definately love to return in the Summer to take full advantage of pool etc.Review dated 26/01/2011

The house is extremely comfortable, well equipped and cosy, but does not fall into the high-end ?luxury? bracket, and the prices I charge reflect that.
