BFB's Overview

The owners of Gellideg have enhanced all that’s lovely about a traditional Welsh cottage with their 5-star finishing touches and, having a child of their own, these include all the essentials for parents with a baby or toddler.

Every care has been taken in the renovation to maintain the charm and character of the cottage while giving it the chic and luxurious ‘boutique’ treatment. Beamed ceilings, slate hearth and a decorative Rayburn all maintain the traditional, cosy ambience where families can feel quite at home, playing games and doing puzzles by the wood burner (large fireguard provided) or enjoying a family meal round the farmhouse dining table – high chair, children’s crockery and cutlery already here. Guests have a tasty welcome treat to look forward to on arrival and the owners provide a basket of fresh produce for their first breakfast at Gellideg. Parents can bring themselves round in the mornings with a frothy cappuccino or creamy latte from the de’Longhi barista coffee machine and children can settle down to enjoy their favourite programmes and films on the flat screen TV and DVD player, or plug the HDMI cable into an iPad, the iPod into the docking station or log into the free WiFi.

From the kitchen, double glazed French doors lead out to a patio with a table and four chairs, plus a second patio up some steps near the kitchen has a couple more armchairs and coffee table where grown-ups can steal a few minutes peace. Beyond the patio, Gellideg has a private, fenced garden where children will have great fun playing hide and seek around the topiary box hedge parterre and living willow wigwam, or just burning off some energy on the lawn. Adults can simply watch on, maybe with a glass of something in hand, enjoying the views, the birds tweeting and blazing sunsets.

When it’s time to sleep, the cottage’s two bedrooms are snuggled under sloping eaves of the first floor and beautifully finished with tasteful decor, high quality furniture and luxury fabrics. The master bedroom has a balcony with a bistro set overlooking the garden and views beyond, plus the bathroom next door features a powerful over bath rain-shower and double ended bath for parents to share a relaxing soak, gazing at the stars through the skylight above. The second bedroom is set up with a 3ft single bed which has another 3ft bed underneath that pulls out to make a twin room, with the bed either at standard height or kept at floor level for toddlers. The travel cot provided can also be set up in here instead of the second single bed. This bedroom has a handy ensuite, with a shower, basin and WC – toddler toilet seat and step provided.

Accommodation Overview:

Gellideg sleeps a family of up to 4 people plus a baby in a cot which is provided. The master bedroom has a king size bed plus space for a cot and the bathroom next door has a rain shower, double ended bath and WC. The second bedroom can be set up as a single room, single room with a cot or as a twin room and has an ensuite shower room with a WC.

Location Information

Gellideg is located in the little hamlet of Cwmhiraeth near the market town of Newcastle Emlyn (3.5 miles) in West Wales. The town has all the usual local shops including a butchers and small supermarket, plus a few cafes, restaurants and pubs. Cwmhiraeth itself is nice and peaceful for taking a pushchair stroll along the country lanes, paddling in the gentle ford with a fishing net or following a woodland footpath by the stream looking at the waterfalls. The bigger town closest to the cottage is Cardigan (13 miles), where there is also a covered market and TESCO which will deliver to Gellideg

The cottage looks out over lovely countryside and Gellideg is as little as 20 minutes drive from West Wales’ sandy beaches and coves to build sandcastles and keep eyes peeled for a dolphin or seal. Llangrannogg, Tresaith and Aberporth are the closest sandy bays (12 miles) which have parking near the beach, cafes or pubs, toilets and shops selling beach toys. Poppit Sands (17 miles) is a large sandy beach with the added fun of sand dunes and New Quay (18 Miles) is a popular little beach resort town with a harbour and boat trips to spot bottlenose dolphins.

From succulent lamb to freshly landed fish and seafood, West Wales is renowned for its excellent local produce and a good place to start is the gastro pub in the village of Penrhiwllan (2.8 miles), The Daffodil Inn. For eats by the beach there is The Ship Inn at Tresaith and Caffi Patio at Llangrannog, serving ice creams and cakes. Families can see farmhouse cheeses being made and sample the results at Caws Canarth (4.5 miles) or go all Willy Wonker at Pembertons award-winning chocolate farm (11.2 miles).

There are plenty of family attractions within easy reach of Gellideg, the nearest being the Teifi Valley Railway (1.7 miles) with steam train rides to put a smile on the faces of all Thomas fans. The soft play centre, Krazy Kids is handy to know with little ones in tow, (12.7 miles) and The Blue Lagoon is one of Wales’ largest indoor waterparks (22.7 miles). Oakwood is one the UK’s top 10 theme parks (22.7 miles) and Pembrey Country Park has something for all the family with an award winning sandy beach, dry ski slope, toboggan ride, crazy golf, pitch and putt, train rides, adventure play area, equestrian centre and nature trails (23.6 miles). Animal lovers can visit the award-winning Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (23.2 miles) or see dolphins and seals at Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park (13.2 miles).

Nearest medical services: GP & Dentist, Newcastle Emlyn. Minor injuries unit Pontycleifion. A&E - West Wales General Hospital, Carmarthen.

Who owns this place?

Welcome to Gellideg Cottage. We are the Smith family, Amanda, Malcolm and James (aged 5). We love exploring, visiting beautiful places, seeing animals and eating great food. We get to do lots of these when we visit Gellideg Cottage.

What do they love about it?

We bought Gellideg 10 years ago and have really enjoyed turning it into a lovely place to escape to with our son and friends. As well as creating a home with lots of character, Amanda redesigned the garden and took a sabbatical from work to build it, planting over 500 plants including the super parterre and living Willow Wigwam. We love staying at the cottage as it is so peaceful and a super place to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are so many fun things to do nearby, and great beaches and walks to explore; we love to come as much as we can. West Wales is a hidden gem with so much to offer. We decided to start letting other people share our special place so they can enjoy it too.

We hope that you love staying here.

What do the kids love about it?

In the words of our son James:

"I love the cottage because it has a fun maze (his description of the parterre) and a Willow Wigwam. And because it has so many toys that I like to play with. I love the waterfalls on the walk nearby through the woods and seeing the big piggy down the lane and the little (miniature) horses in the field close to the cottage. I also like paddling in the river that crosses the lane (ford) at the bottom of the hill." James aged 5
