Surrounded by fields of sunflowers, just 12 miles from the medieval, maritime city of La Rochelle, the 4 gites of Le Moulin Boutillon have fantastic facilities for tots to teens, so parents can really kick back and relax.
In 2015, the owners upgraded the gites and onsite amenities to 4-star standards, not only with internal makeovers but also adding more fun things for children, including a large, netted trampoline and a Scout-style tepee in shady trees as a base camp for mini adventures and the perfect spot for picnics. At the same time, the games room was extended and more toys were added to provide a cool, indoor play space for all ages, including table football, table tennis, a pool table, Thomas the Tank engine train set and Bluetooth system for steaming favourite tunes.
Besides all this, children and grown-ups can burn off energy on a huge playing field, complete with football nets, badminton nets, a small tennis court and hammocks to flop into, whilst little ones can have their own fun on ride-ons, trikes and in a little play house or in an enclosed sand-pit play area with swings and a slide. To cool down, everyone can splash into the safely enclosed pool, with a shallow end, steps and pool toys, plus the pool is heated to a toasty 29°C which makes the gites ideal for pre-schooler holidays outside high season. There are sun loungers and parasols for relaxing by the pool and all the gites have their own garden for a little more privacy and stoking up a BBQ. The gites themselves are bright, modern and comfortable, with all mod cons, helpful baby/toddler equipment and the trusty back up of satellite TV with UK Freeview Channels, a DVD player and Wi Fi.
The 19th century farm buildings of Le Moulin Boutillon have been tastefully converted into 4 gites – the 4-bedroom Maison (sleeps 8+babies); 3-bedroom Ecurie (sleeps 6/7+ babies); 2-bedroom Duplex (sleeps 4/5+babies); and the 1-bedroom Puce (sleeps 2/4+baby). All the bedrooms, except one in the Maison, have space for a cot and 4 travel cots are available, as well as 2 high chairs and other baby/toddler equipment, including baby baths, bed guards, potty, stairgates, plastic crockery and cutlery etc.
The Duplex is a cosy, 2-bedroom gite, with a pretty picket-fenced garden, overlooking a large, greasy area with a badminton court and swing. The gite is also next door to the games room. The living/dining area of the gite has exposed beams, a comfy sofa, a flatscreen TV with UK Freeview channels, a DVD player and a dining table. The living room opens to the garden which has a paved patio area and a lawn, with a picnic table, sunbeds, picnic/play rug, parasol and barbecue. At one side of the open plan living room is a fitted kitchen area with a fridge freezer, electric oven and gas hob, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, kettle and washing machine. One of the bedrooms in the gite has a double bed and the second has a double and a single bed. Both bedrooms have space for a cot. The gite has a modern tiled bathroom with a large walk-in shower, on the ground floor.
Le Moulin Boutillon provides a winning combination of coast of countryside, overlooking fields of sunflowers and less than half an hour from the historic port of La Rochelle, sandy beaches, the Ile de Re and the leafy waterways of the Marais Poitevin.
The Gites are nestled between the villages of Angliers and Verrine, which are within walking distance and have a handy selection of amenities, including 2 bakeries, a grocery shop, a pizza restaurant/bar and weekly markets.
The vibrant maritime city of La Rochelle is just 12 miles away, with a historic harbour framed by the turreted towers of a medieval walled town, where a maze of narrow cobbled streets are packed with buzzing cafe bars, pavement restaurants and interesting shops. The state of the art Aquarium in La Rochelle is one of the region’s must-visit attractions, or families can take the suspension bridge to the Ile de Re, renowned for its dune-backed beaches, chic harbour towns and prized oysters.
Just a few miles south of La Rochelle, the seaside resort of Chatelaillon Plage is a top spot to laze the day away on a beautiful sandy beach and paddle in the sea. This ‘Belle Epoque’ resort also has a fab waterpark with indoor and outdoor heated pools and a formidable 110m water slide. For a complete change of scene, families can head north west of La Rochelle to explore the leafy waterways of the Marais Poitevin, known as the ‘green Venice’ of France, with flat bottomed boat trips and canoes for hire to glide through reedy canals, keeping eyes peeled for birds.
Whatever the kids are into, there is a host of attractions for a fun family day out. Fouras (30 mins) boasts one of the best mini golf centres in France, with two 18-hole courses with either an adventure or tropical theme in exotic surroundings. For animal lovers, there are lions, tigers, monkeys and giraffes among the 50 species to see at Natur Zoo de Mervent or families can take a horse drawn carriage to spot the wildlife in one of Europe’s largest animal parks at Zoodysee in the Chize forest (both within an hour’s drive). For a space-age day out, Futuroscope (1 hr 30) is one of the biggest theme parks in France, with an awesome array of interactive experiences and attractions for all ages and with few height restrictions, from thrilling rides to 4D shows.
