When owners Gail and Mick took on the
200-year old ‘house of Seville’, the simple farmhouse had been empty and
neglected for years, with no running water and no electricity. Undeterred, the
couple rolled up their sleeves for the labour of love that’s transformed the
crumbling cottage into an authentic Spanish family home and welcoming guest
The name is a bit of a mystery, because
‘Cortijo del Sevillano’ is actually hundreds of miles from Seville in a quiet corner
of eastern Almeria, with views across the sun baked landscape of cacti, aloes
and palms, to mountains in the distance. In this quiet and secluded spot, the
Cortijo makes a wonderful oasis for weary parents to recharge their batteries and
take full advantage of the British hosts’ baby friendly hospitality.
The Cortijo has 4 guest rooms which are
beautifully simple and comfortable, with cool cotton linen, big fluffy towels
and rustic features like beamed ceilings and wood floors. In addition, the
Cortijo has a self contained studio apartment for 3, with a kitchenette, ‘rain
shower’ wetroom and private courtyard with a barbecue.
The main living room in the farmhouse has a
flat screen TV with Sky channels plus two of the guest rooms have a TV and DVD
player. The owners will happily lend guests a docking station for an iPod and
there’s a small library of books, CD’s DVD’s and videos. The indoor dining room
has a farmhouse table for 10 and the large kitchen is well equipped for self catering.
At the heart of the Cortijo is a lovely
courtyard for al fresco dining in the shade of a large palm tree and with
bright Bougainvillea tumbling over the walls. The Cortijo also has a shaded
terrace with rattan furniture to curl up with the Kindle and a lovely swimming
pool for a refreshing dip or simply to laze on the loungers, admiring the views.
Cortijo del Sevillano comprises a farmhouse
with 4 double guest rooms and a studio room for 3 people. The accommodation can
be booked as individual units on a B&B basis (except in July & August when the property is rental only), with space for a cot in two
of the guest rooms, or booked as a whole for a maximum of 10 adults plus 2
Cortijo del Sevillano is just nicely off the
beaten track, in the rural countryside near the coast of Eastern Almeria, which
boasts an enviable 300 days of sunshine per year.
The nearest town, Cuevas del Almanzora, is
just 3 kilometres away and makes an interesting place to stroll around, thanks to
a ‘silver rush’ in the 19th century leaving a legacy of grand old
houses. The silver miners also took up residence in caves and there are five
levels of abandoned dwellings to explore at Terrera del Calguerín.
Besides its heritage, Cuevas del Almanzora
has a handy range of shops, supermarkets, banks, bars and restaurants, plus
market stalls of local produce fill the Plaza Mayor every Tuesday and
The nearest beaches
are just 10 minutes drive from the Cortijo, including the unspoilt and
uncrowded sandy beach at Villaricos and the Blue Flag Las Marinas beach at
Vera, with parasols and sun loungers for hire plus ‘chiringuito’ beach bars for
snacks, drinks and ice creams. Along the coast, Puerto del Reu beach has even more facilities for
families but can be a little busier, especially in the summer months. Mornings
are the best times to head to the beaches with toddlers because the sea is
usually calm and safe, whereas stronger waves tend to swell up in the afternoons,
attracting the windsurfers.
The white hill top town of
Mojacar is within easy reach for a change of scene, with narrow winding streets
to explore, panoramic restaurants and cafes, plus souvenir shops all selling
the Indalo ‘Mojacar man’ lucky charms. After a bit of sightseeing, families can
also enjoy an afternoon on the beach at Mojacar Playa.
The historic provincial town of
Almeria is around an hour’s drive (100kms), set on the coast and overlooked by the
impressive Moorish fort of Alcazaba, which has towers, ruins and dungeons to
explore. For something completely different in the Almeria province, families
can step into the set of the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns at Oasys theme
Park, complete with cowboy shoot outs, stage coaches, themed restaurants,
safari zoo and swimming pool with slides.
Nearest Medical Services (GP & A&E): Cuevas del Almanzora
Medical Centre, 10 minutes drive from the house.
