On the edge of one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’, Chez Humphries is a bright, modern bungalow that British owners, Sarah and Barry, have purpose built for a couple of families to have fun and relaxing holidays together.
The couple first fell in love with Aubeterre and the Charente/Dordogne countryside back in 2003, when their son was working in the village as a chef. Having their own building company back in the Cotswolds, they couldn’t resist snapping up a plot of land, just minutes from the village square, when it became available in 2007 and they’ve done a fine job creating a smart holiday home from home.
Being all on one level, the house is baby and toddler friendly and the open plan living, dining area and kitchen means parents can keep an eye on little ones while they play with the toys and games provided, or watch the TV and DVD’s. French doors flood the room with light and open straight out to a dining patio which overlooks the large grass garden and village beyond. At the front of the house, a marble table and benches have especially lovely views and make the perfect spot for sundowners. Smooth tiled floors and clean white decor throughout make the house fresh and airy, complemented by contemporary furnishings and kitted out with all mod cons, from the well equipped kitchen to free Wi FI throughout.
Having a mix of doubles, twins and bunk beds in the four bedrooms, provides considerable flexibility for large families, extended families or family and friends, and three bathrooms means no queuing for the loo.
Chez Humphries is purpose built and furnished to comfortably accommodate 8 people, plus a baby in a cot which is provided. The master bedroom has a king size bed and ensuite shower room with a washbasin and WC. Bedroom two has a double bed and an ensuite shower room with a washbasin and WC. Bedroom three has two single beds and bedroom 4 has bunk beds. Between bedrooms 3 and 4, a large bathroom has a bath with a shower overhead, a washbasin and WC, plus ‘Jack and Jill’ doors to the bedrooms to make it ensuite if one isn’t occupied. There is space for a cot in either the twin bedded room or the room with bunk beds.
The kitchen area is modern and well equipped, including an electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher, plus there is a second fridge and washing machine in a utility room. The living/dining area is bright and comfortable, with two large sofas, satellite TV, DVD player and DVD’s, shelves of books and a selection of board games to play on the coffee table. The dining table seats 6 and a highchair is provided. French doors lead from the sitting room to the patio and garden, furnished with a table and chairs, BBQ and sunbeds. A marble table and benches are also at the front of the house to admire the views, especially at sunset.
Chez Humphries is located on the edge of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, where the Charente region borders the Dordogne. Aubeterre is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France and the cafe bars and restaurants in the sun dappled main square are only 5 minutes walk from the house. The village has an amazing, underground church from the 5th century and narrow winding streets to explore, as well as handy shops, including a small ‘Superette’, a butchers and the all-important boulangerie to pick up fresh pastries and baguettes for breakfast. Chalais is a small market town approximately 10 minutes drive with a larger variety of shops and supermarkets.
At the foot of Aubeterre and only 5 minutes drive from the house, is the River Dronne, with a popular river beach for picnics and paddling, a cafe bar, a children’s play area and canoes for hire. The nearest beaches on the coast are 1.5 hours away. The River Dronne effectively marks the border with the Dordogne, which is renowned for its stunning scenery, hilltop towns, ancient castles and some of France’s most mouth-watering gastronomic delights. Chez Humphries is also midway between Cognac country to the north and the Bordeaux vineyards to the south, with the town of Cognac and St Emillion just over an hour away for vineyard tours and tastings.
