BFB's Overview

A world away from Lanzarote’s main tourist strips, Casa el Morro is an oasis of peace and tranquillity overlooking the moonscape volcanoes of Timanfaya and lush vineyards that thrive in their foothills. The owner, Rachel, has taken 10 years to transform an 18th century finca into an exotic, boutique cluster of Canarian cottages and a family sized yurt, tucked into a hillside near the whitewashed wine village of Uga, secluded by tall palm trees and jacarandas.

Rachel has made it her mission to help frazzled parents completely unwind by laying on home cooked organic breakfasts and leading yoga sessions herself as well as tracking down specialist therapists to offer many different styles of massage and healing Ayurveda treatments.

The finca has been cleverly converted into 7 completely individual and self contained cottages set in an extensive garden and grounds, landscaped in the typical Lanzarotian style with BBQ areas and chimineras. At the centre is a blissful sun-trap swimming pool with luxurious loungers for snoozing in the sun and enclosed day beds for siestas in the shade.

There are distinctly eastern influences in Raquel’s interior design and decor which works really well to complement the traditional Canarian style and almost spiritual ambience of Casa el Morro. Luxurious Balinese day beds, teak furniture from Indonesia, colourful wall hangings, ornate antiques and wafts of incense on the breeze create a sophisticated setting while each of the cottages and villas have been individually styled and furnished with character and flair. Rachel has also used original and ecological materials to be as environmentally friendly as possible, including natural oils to nurture the timbers of the ceilings and doors, as well as earthy coloured limestone washes for the thick stone walls. All the accommodation is well equipped for families, with all mod cons including fully fitted kitchens, plasma satellite TV’s, CD players and free Wi Fi plus many have four poster beds and marble finished bathrooms with roll top baths.

Accommodation Overview

Raquel (sleeps 5) is the largest cottage at casa el Morro, providing 130 square metres of space over two floors with fab views over the gardens to Timanfaya’s volcanoes. On the ground floor the cottage has a lovely spacious lounge with a sofa bed, an open plan kitchen dining area and a huge double bedroom with carved headboard, antique wood burning stove and panoramic views. On the first floor, the second panoramic bedroom has a canopied double bed and a large bathroom with a Victorian style bath and marble shower. For making the most of the views, the cottage has a balcony and two ground floor terraces furnished with comfortable sofas, teak tables, chairs and an antique sun lounger.

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: prices based of total of 4 guests. A 5th guest is charged additional 15 Euros per night. Breakfast is only include for 2 people, additional breakfasts are charged 6 euros per person per day.

Location Information

Casa el Morro is located on the edge of the dramatic, volcanic Timanfaya National Park, between Lanzarote’s lively coastal resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. The finca is also within the extraordinary wine valley of La Geria which produces most of Lanzarote’s excellent wines despite the vines looking surreal and unreal against the black ash moonscape.

The small wine village of Uga is close by, with low, white houses, palm trees and camels creating a North African charm – the camels being bred here for volcano safaris into Timanfaya which beats a donkey ride on the beach any day! No visit would be complete without a trip up Fire Mountain and seeing the guide pour water down volcanic chimneys to be spurted back out as blistering steam.

The nearest beach is only 6 kms away and the family friendly resort of Playa Blanca is also only 15 minutes drive, offering a full choice of bars and restaurants, as well as a string of sandy beaches with watersports, loungers and parasols. A little further down the coast, Punta de Papagayo is the most southerly tip of the island, with a chain of idyllic coves and bays to discover, promising fine golden sand and warm, crystal clear sea.

Staying at Casa el Morro, families will find plenty of things to see and do within an hour’s drive and the owners will be happy to provide their personal recommendations, from the best markets to the best restaurants to secret coves and beauty spots for a picnic.

Of all the Canaries, Lanzarote claims to have the most reliable climate, averaging a balmy 23 degrees, 3,000 hours of sunshine and only 16 days of rain per year. Unlike the high rise horrors of other Canary Islands, Lanzarote has also been developed with remarkable sensitivity to its unique landscape and with strong influences of the island’s most famous artist and architect, Cesar Manrique, who was a friend of the family of Casa el Morro.
Getting here: Lanzarote’s international airport is just 16 kms (20 mins), with flights widely available from airports across the UK.
