BFB's Overview

Excuse the pun, but this quintessentially French barn conversion in the Lot has got ‘the lot’ as a baby-friendly bolthole for up to 16 friends and or family.

It’s not surprising that guests rave about the location and facilities at Las Cabanes. Set in a beautiful peaceful rural valley with wonderful views of rolling countryside and an impressive array of on-site facilities for all ages, provided solely for your enjoyment, the relaxation really can start the moment guests arrive. Whilst the kids enjoy the safe indoor and outdoor play areas and great selection of toys, books and games, the adults can settle back with a chilled beer or a glass of wine and ponder whether to relax by the pool, on one of the three terraces, or find a quiet spot amid the 3 acres of scenic gardens and grounds.

Kids can spend happy days just being kids, whether splashing in the pool, feeding the friendly on site animals, dressing up, exploring, playing cowboys and Indians, enjoying the play equipment, or cooling off indoors watching a DVD, playing indoor games, table football, snooker, or reading a book from the extensive library. The secure play areas with foam matting, baby gyms and toddlertastic toys mean that even the littlest members of the family are well catered for, so parents can truly relax. On that note, the extensive range of good quality baby and toddler equipment means parents can travel light, so even packing is stress-free! Guests can even order an arrival night meal or, as is often the case, several evening meals a week, all part of the service that owners Julie and Steve provide to ensure guests get the best from their break and, as the reviews section here shows, it obviously works!

For enthusastic chefs, there's a brand new kitchen (2016) at the house and plenty of tempting local produce to be discovered at the bustling local food markets. Everything from delicious fresh meats and fish to the freshest salads and fruit, is available, locally produced to delight even the most discerning foodie. There’s sizzling barbeques to be had under starry skies or dine out at one of the many excellent local restaurants or night markets in the area. Courtesy bikes are provided to explore the picturesque local area or pick up the morning croissants so guests can burn calories not fuel! Plus there are many other attractions are available locally from wineries, pretty villages, gardens and golf for the grown ups, to children’s farms, canoeing and adventure parks for the kids. There’s so much to do on site and beyond that two weeks just isn’t enough!

Accommodation Overview:

Las Cabanes comfortably sleeps up to 16 family and friends plus babies in cots, with several available. The main barn conversion comprises 6 bedrooms , all on the ground floor, and four bathrooms, of which one has a bath tub, whilst the others have showers. None of the bathrooms are en-suites. The bedrooms consist of 2 double rooms with king size bed, a family room with king size bed and bunk beds, a twin room (two single beds), a single room and a room with a set of bunk beds. Detached from the main house, La Rosa is a studio cottage for 2 guests plus babies, set in its own gardens. The cottage has one double bedroom and a lounge area.

The main house has a very well equipped kitchen (newly installed for Summer 2016) including all the equipment one would expect plus a dishwasher and two large fridges, which come in handy for big groups. There's indoor dining and lounge seating for 16.

Outside, there are extensive mature gardens with lawns, several sun terraces, a private pool (heated) a covered barn dining area and both gas and traditional barbecues. The owners provide bikes and outdoor play equipment for all ages.

Location Information

Las Cabanes is ideal for getting away from it all, deep in beautiful French countryside but the villages of Le Temple Sur Lot and Castelmoron are also only 3km away for the nearest boulangeries, bars and restaurants. The villages are also on the banks of the Lot, where river beaches are just the place for a picnic, paddling and fresh water swimming, or motor boats, canoes and funky paddle boats are available for hire.

To stock up on essential shopping, there are four supermarkets within 15 minutes drive but the local artisan shops and markets are a highlight in themselves. Throughout the summer, evening markets also have a friendly family atmosphere for a memorable night out, sampling local delicacies and the fine regional wines. The Lot region borders mile upon mile of famous Bordeaux vineyards so there are numerous chateau and ‘caves’ offering tastings and tours. Plus there are great restaurants to suit all budgets including Michelin-starred establishments, in nearby Pujol and Villeneuve-Sur-Lot.

For guests who can tear themselves away from Las Cabanes, there are free passes to the local tennis courts available and a variety of family attractions nearby including two water parks with slides, pools, jacuzzis and cafe/bars within an hours drive. Parc Walibi features a variety of rides and roller coasters plus sea lion shows, or at Parc en Ciel little monkeys can clamber around on a special web of Tyrolean cables for little ones 2-6 years and older kids and adults can sample more challenging courses or simply relax by the outdoor pool and playground there. Facilities for horse-riding, 10-pin bowling, underground cave exploration and fishing are available nearby and the owners also provide a variety of child and adult bikes for exploring the surrounding countryside and villages.

Getting There: The nearest airport is Bergerac (70km) with flights available from several UK airports with low cost airlines including Ryanair, Flybe, BMI and Easyjet.

Nearest Medical Services: GP at Castelmoron, 3km. A&E at Villeneuve sur Lot (15km)

Who owns this place?

Las Cabanes is owned and managed by Julie and Steve Cormack and their daughters Annabelle and Lily. They live discreetly on site but are on hand if you need anything at all during your stay. Julie worked in HR and teaching and Steve worked in telecoms and management before taking the plunge and moving to France in 2003. They had holidayed with their own small children and found it difficult to find properties that catered specifically for families. Their desire was to set up and run a truly family friendly destination, offering comfortable relaxed family accommodation whilst providing all the necessary equipment for small children, so that clients can pack light and relax from the moment they arrive. They fell in love with the unspoilt Lot et Garonne region. "It's like an unspoilt Tuscany or Provence and I'd better shut up now or I'll be responsible for spoiling it." Sam Taylor -The Observer. Steve and Julie have been successfully providing fantastic family holidays here at Las Cabanes since 2004.

What do they love about it?

It goes without saying that we love the weather. Long hot summers, warm sunny springs and temperatures in double figures sometimes even in December. But also we love the space, tranquility, peace and views and the fact we can be totally in the countryside but within a few minutes can get to all amenities and attractions. There are great circular walks from the property too and we still get a thrill when we spot wildlife locally. I love the sound of green woodpeckers tapping in the trees or the sound of the nightingales singing on balmy evenings. Seeing a family of wild boar with babies when driving back from the supermarket is something I'll never forget. We feel really lucky to have found our little corner of paradise. We hope you love it too.

What do the kids love about it?

All our little visitors love the large 10 x 5 m pool with roman steps for them to play in the shallows. They seem to happily while away many hours in and around the pool area. Petting the animals is popular too, especially collecting the eggs from our chickens: Lulu, Gertrude Hilda and Doris. Extensive on site facilities mean families often don't venture far. For babies and toddlers we have paddling pool, ride ons, slide and baby swing. For the under 8's we have swings, slide, tepee, dressing up clothes, rocking horse, bikes, football nets, balls, indoor books, toys, games, age appropriate dvd's etc. For the older children we have full size pool table, table football, basket ball nets, badminton, tennis, boules, rounders etc.

  • we could not have found a better house for the children (all under 5) - in addition to the fantastic pool, there are lots of outside play areas, a play room, and many animals on site. the owners are also lovely.Review dated 01/08/2013

  • Just amazing. This was the easiest holiday we have ever had with children! A massive playroom full of toys and loads of outside toys, kept them busy for hours. Everything you could possibly need for children from newborn was available from monitors, blackout blinds, cots, highchairs etc. No need to take anything of your own and the owners were just amazing, very much leaving you alone to enjoy your holiday but were at hand to help out with our endless questions. Beautiful countryside surrounds the property with lots of wonderful little villages nearby to go and explore. Stunning pool and an extremely relaxing atmosphere. A perfect holiday house for all the family.Review dated 08/07/2013

  • We had a fantastic holiday here. The house was really comfortable with wonderful views. There is everything here to occupy children of all ages. Julie and Steve were amazing hosts, they kept out of our way but were always at hand if we needed to ask a quick question. Although the weather was abnormally horrible, we still had a great holiday, thank you.Review dated 07/07/2013

  • I'm nervous recommending this as highly as it deserves as I don't want it to be all booked up before we can visit again! Steve and Julie couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. This is a beautiful property in a lovely location, and so thoughtfully and well equipped. We can't wait to go back.Review dated 08/06/2013

We were also able to make many meals using the well equipped and fab kitchen! The super lovely Steve, Julie and their two beautiful daughters remain as private as one would like yet they are there also to provide advice or help in any matter. The babies and I dare say us adults were fortunate enough to thoroughly enjoy a visit to their outstanding nearby property which again displays their delightful and careful taste both inside and out. Here the babies most enjoyed feeding the onsite animals. We took advantage of the pre-arrival shopping list option which was fab as we were able to concentrate on settling in without the worry of self catering. What an amazing place, house and couple!! Strongly recommend, ubber gutted to be home and would return in a heartbeat. Thank you again
