Lulled by the sound of the waves, babies and toddlers might just stay asleep long enough for mum and dad to enjoy a precious coffee in bed – you never know! Even if it’s the usual early start, padding out onto the balcony to flop in a hammock and gaze over to the sand dunes isn’t bad either. Get the croissants out, pop the little one in a high chair and a leisurely breakfast on the terrace is a perfect start to the day, then after fun days on the beach, its back on the balcony for a bbq and amazing sunsets over the sea.
Simple pleasures like these make this family-friendly 3-bedroom apartment in Biscarosse Plage a great choice for seaside holidays to South West France. The owners, who have lived in France since 2005 and have two young girls themselves, fell in love with Biscarosse Plage a few years ago and snapped up the apartment for their own family beach holidays. A boardwalk and soft sand paths through the dunes lead to the fantastic beach with miles of space to play, build sand castles, splash in the waves and watch the surfers.
The owners have lovingly decorated and furnished the apartment in modern family style whilst kitting it out with everything needed for an easy, stress free holiday. There’s a full range of baby-friendly gear and a McLaren stroller is available at no extra charge plus toys, games, books, TV’s, DVD and CD player, iPod dock and Wi Fi. The living room and bedrooms are spacious, calming and comfortable and there will be no queues for the loo thanks to a family bathroom with shower and twin basins, a separate shower-room and two separate WC’s. All the windows face the dunes and French doors lead onto the balcony with the hammock, deckchairs, table and bbq to enjoy the likes of Arcachon oysters and fresh caught fish washed down with fine Bordeaux wines.
The first floor apartment, for up to 6/7 people, has two double bedrooms with king size beds and one twin room, with space for a cot in all three plus a camp bed if required. One of the double bedrooms has a TV and DVD player. Fans are provided for warm summer nights. The apartment also has a well equipped kitchen complete with all mod cons including a dishwasher and washing machine, spacious living room with two comfy sofas, one bathroom with tub, a shower and twin basins, a separate shower room and two separate WCs. There is a large balcony terrace furnished with dining furniture and BBQ and secure underground car parking. The apartment block is securely gated.
The apartment is located just a few steps from the sands at Biscarrosse-Plage, with restaurants and shops literally on the doorstep. Since the commercial area is to the rear of the apartment complex and the apartment faces the dunes to the front, guests can enjoy all the benefits of such a central location yet very little disturbance.
Biscarrosse-Plage itself is set about halfway along the sweeping Côte d'Argent, famous for 200km of almost unbroken sandy beaches and Atlantic surf running down France’s South West Coast to all the way to Biarritz. The golden sandy beach and soft dunes make it a favourite seaside resort amongst the French, plus families with young children can also pack a picnic for days on the sheltered shores of two nearby lakes, each with white sandy lake beaches, backed by pine forests and calm, clear water for paddling and swimming. Switching between the beach resort and lake is part of the fun, thanks to a network of cycle tracks and walking trails, with maps available from the local tourist office.
There are a variety of places to eat out at Biscarosse Plage with one of the owners’ favourites Le Long Beach Bar and Brasserie on the ground floor of the apartment building. The Brasserie offers a large selection of seafood at reasonable prices given the generous portions and a good children’s menu offers 3 courses for around €10.
For easy eating in, the Poissonnerie in the main street sells yummy paella along with an array of fresh caught fish and opposite the fish shop, another market-type shop sells a range of pre-prepared dishes. Around 30km up the coast, Arcachon is one of the top spots for plump oysters and boat trips around the bay weave amongst the swathes of oyster beds. Arcachon is also another attractive seaside town and close to one of the region’s must see attractions – the gigantic Dune du Pyla, Europe’s largest sand dune. It’s a bit of a climb to the top but the views out to sea are worth it, not to mention the fun of scrambling and sliding down the slopes or pretending to be Lawrence of Arabia!
