Chaucer Barn is an award-winning conversion set on a 80-acre estate on the edge of the charming village of Gresham and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Once owned by the great man himself, it is now a stylish spot for glamorous group getaways with nine bedrooms (sleeps 18 plus cots), choice of four lounges, a huge dining hall and its own 5-acre garden, with beautiful views over rolling fields to mature woodland.
The barn is heavenly for kids and adults alike. Junior guests will adore exploring the 5 acre gardens with kids play area and endless opportunities for scavenger hunts, wildlife spotting, and hide and seek especially in the Pyramid Garden! Inside, the huge ground floor has a selection of child-friendly bedrooms and play zones, which include the games room, with its selection of board games, table tennis and darts (best avoided with little ones!), and the home cinema lounge - complete with massive 46" LCD screen, XBOX and comprehensive games/DVD library, including a good few kids favourites.
Parents will appreciate the long list of nursery gear, which makes packing light (see grey box below), supply of toys and useful additional services (extra charge) such as babysitting, cook, housekeeping and private chef with waiting staff for dinner parties. As well as the very comprehensively outfitted kitchen, which boasts multiple ovens, dishwashers etc and is sociable being open-plan to the central living area. Flooded with light by day thanks to its huge 20+ foot windows, the main reception room is a fantastic space for celebration dinner parties and, despite its cathedral-like proportions, it has a cosy feel being filled with English Oak and heated York stone floor. It is flanked by three downstairs bedrooms (dbl & 2xtwin/dbl), two bathrooms, and a cosy reading room with fireplace. There's also the home cinema room and the games room, which feature sliding, floor to ceiling glass windows onto the York stone patio.
Upstairs, there's a large drawing room with open fireplace, comfortable sofas and a stunning view over the herb garden one-side and a gallery view over the dining room the other. There are a further six bedrooms of which the most sought after are usually, 'Flint' thanks to its 6'6 bateau lit bed and ensuite with antique roll-top bath; 'Blue' with its floor to ceiling windows offering spectacular garden views and ensuite with another antique roll top bath; and finally, ’Black’ with its king-size four-poster bed, elaborate wall hangings, custom made teak Indian furniture and original flint wall.
All together Chaucer's Barn is a sophisticated party pad which will appeal to all ages and all tastes. Its setting, with spectacular gardens and views beyond, just a few miles from Norfolk's most beautiful beaches and within walking distance of a good pub, make it an exceptional escape.

Kids love the North Norfolk Railway (steam trains from Sheringham to Holt), Sea Life Sanctuary at Hunstanton, dinosaur park at Weston Longville, Banham Zoo Nr Attleborough, crabbing at Wells Harbour, and the seal-spotting trips from Blakeney. Cycle hire with tag-alongs and baby seats can be arranged and the North Norfolk coast is less than a 3 mile flat bike ride away. Even closer, within a 15 minute walk, is the friendly Wheatsheaf pub which has good home-cooked food, a children's menu and outdoor seating.
For more family-friendly dining try The Globe in Wells which has a good 'Little Adults' menu, a sunny courtyard and a private dining room for up to 20. The Victoria in Holkham and White Horse at Brancaster are also highly regarded for family meals. Alternatively, the excellent fish and chips on Wells Quay are hard to beat! Nearby Walsingham Farm Barns sell a brilliant range of speciality foods direct from small suppliers, along with some excellent fresh-made ready meals. Closer to 'home' the Byfords deli in Holt (4miles) also has a good range of gourmet ready meals, picnics and deli goodies. Holt also has good shopping with a wide selection of boutiques and unique shops. For more glamorous shopping there's Burnham Market, sometimes known as Chelsea on Sea, which has some good gastro-pubs and seafood bistros too.
For a special night out. there's the excellent Galton Blackiston's Michelin starred Morston Hall.
