Thanks to Tuscany and Umbria so often hogging the limelight, Le Marche is still a relatively undiscovered gem in Italy’s hot list of dreamy destinations. Dean and Lesley discovered their dream home here eight years ago, in the form of the 19th century listed country house Caserma Carina which they’ve lovingly and sensitively restored to include four spacious apartments for up to five people.
Surrounded by stunning scenery as far as the eye can see, Caserma Carina provides a glorious setting to get away from it all, relax and enjoy quality time as a family. Rolling countryside is framed by the snow topped Sibillini Mountains, yellow sun flower fields are spectacular in summer and drinking in the sunsets with a glass of chilled Prosecco is as good as it gets. What’s more, Caserma Carina is also within an hour of the beaches, resorts and harbour towns of Italy’s Adriatic coast so guests can enjoy the very best of both worlds. Foodies will be especially tempted by the cookery courses with Guida, wine tastings to a local vineyard and truffle hunting (which kids can enjoy too) with Paulo who’s supplied his precious finds to Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey and Raymond Blanc, Antonio Carluccio and Giorgio Locatelli.
Caserma Carina itself is a magnificent, sun-bleached mansion set in immaculate gardens with a panoramic, swimming pool. Grown ups can happily laze away the days reclining on cushioned loungers while children play on the manicured lawns or cool off in the pool, plus there are shady gazebos, outdoor dining furniture and bbq’s for eating al fresco. The roomy apartments have been designed and finished to high standards, combining original features with luxurious modern comforts, from rich chestnut ceilings and stone tiled floors, to antique furnishings and leather sofas. The essential family entertainment includes 32” flat screen TV, DVD player, MP3 dock and WiFi, plus an extensive library of books and films. The apartments have heating and air conditioning, well equipped fitted kitchens and helpful baby gear from cots to crockery. For a night off the cooking, Italian meals are available to order and watch out for the fish man on Wednesday, delivering the catch of the day from the coast to the door.

Besides the natural beauty, guests at Caserma Carina are spoilt with a wealth of culture, art, architecture and excellent local cuisine.
Surrounded by stunning countryside, Caserma Carina is just a fifteen minute walk (2 minutes drive) to the ancient unspoilt town of Mogliano. The town has all the essential amenities of pavement cafe bars, trattorias, shops and supermarkets but simply wandering around the historic and atmospheric Centro Storico is a pleasure. Market day provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a slice of lively and colourful Italian life while stocking up on local produce for a family feast or picnic.
Throughout the region, there are countless, unspoilt hill top towns and cities to explore. Urbino is widely acknowledged as one of the centres of the amazing Italian Renaissance while Ascoli Piceno, built in Travertine Marble, features two elegant yet buzzing Piazzas to watch the world go by.
Under an hour’s drive from Caserma Carina, Porto San Giorgio is a pretty medieval fishing village for days on the coast, complete with safe sandy beaches and a choice of family friendly restaurants. Another Adriatic highlight is Monte Canero, with dramatic sea cliffs and walks to secluded coves.
The Sibillini National Park is a natural adventure playground for every outdoor pursuit from mountain biking and hiking to winter ski-ing. Other things for families to see and do include the underground lakes and alabaster formations of Frasassi Caves, a water park within an hour’s drive and a zoo at Ancona.

Getting There: The nearest airports to Caserma Carina are Ancona (1 hour), Rimini and Pescara (2hrs) and Bologna (3hrs). Car hire is recommended to do full justice to the beautiful region of Le Marche and the owners can arrange competitive rates through Rentpro (SIXT).
