Birchill
Farm and its cluster of six cottages (sleeping 2-7) has a magical quality for
adults and children alike. Its tranquil location, set almost a mile from the
nearest public road, allows parents to relax and enjoy seeing their little ones
roam freely from the moment they arrive, whilst the brilliant indoor and
outdoor play areas, toddler-friendly nature trails and interactive farm rounds
have under 10s captivated from the outset.
It is evident that the
farm's owners Simon
and Margaret have drawn on their experiences of travel with their own
brood of five to create a family-friendly haven complete with well
designed wooden play area, (with brilliant 'surf swing'), a play
barn dedicated to under 5s, a games barn, children's book library,
wildlife activities for 5-11 year olds and a whole host of four-legged
friends including Dotty the sheep, goats, ponies and a trio of alpacas!
Even the most hard to please tot is kept fully
entertained without ever leaving the grounds. That said, the many
attractions
of this slice of North Devon including the Tarka trail skirting the grounds
and the
many family-friendly days out and lovely stretches of coast within a
short
drive, are hard for guests to resist.
A long list of
nursery gear is provided (see grey Fast Facts box) so even packing for
the stay comes without the usual worries. Plus, with
little ones worn out by the evening, grown-up guests can enjoy relaxing
nights in, particularly
when taking advantage of the excellent home-made ready meal delivery
service.
Alternatively, the handy babysitting service allows parents the
opportunity for
a night out.
Oak Apple Cottage is a pretty two bed, two storey, detached cottage packed full of character with exposed beams and sloping ceilings. The spacious open plan living area houses a well equipped, white shaker style kitchen, with dishwasher, fan oven, fridge freezer and washer/dryer. The cosy lounge area has flatscreen TV, DVD player and fire and a dining area with seating for four. Upstairs there is a pretty double bedroom with white, wrought iron double bed and en suite bathroom with bath and shower over the bath. The second bedroom is a twin with adjacent shower room.
Outside there is a fully enclosed terrace to the front of the cottage.

Birchill's friendly owners Simon and Margaret are full of advice on
things to do with young children locally having had their own brood of
five to entertain.
Their tips include a swimming pool just ten minutes drive away, sailing, horse riding and quad
biking. A visit to Rosemoor Garden, just 10 minutes away is said to be a must as it features a nature trail that will
keep children amused for hours and a fun new play area.
The restaurant serves decent lunches including children's lunch boxes, and a very tempting selection of cakes.
Another popular day out is a visit to one of the National Trust
properties nearby. Arlington Court, Castle Drogo and Knightshayes Court
are all about an hour's drive away. Children are very welcome and there
are quizzes for them to do whilst looking around the house. Arlington Court is often a favourite due to the horse drawn
carriage ride around the grounds.
For families who enjoy walking, Lydford Gorge on the edge of
Dartmoor is always popular but it's not suitable for pushchairs and can be nail biting with little ones.
Cyclists will thoroughly enjoy the Tarka Trail and guests can either bring their own bikes
or hire them locally.
Beach lovers will not be disappointed, with a great choice from wide stretches of sandy beach for surfing and sandcastle
building or smaller coves perfect for rockpooling, all within a short drive.

Lovely cottages very toddler friendly with an area outside for them to run around. Our daughter loved it! Very friendly owners really made us feel at home. Location is a great base to explore Devon, but lots of things to do at the farm. The indoor play barn is outstanding. So many lovely toys.
