Easy Rider in Provence
May 13, 2011
The imposing bulk of Mont Ventoux in Provence, 45 minutes drive from Avignon, is a regular stage on the Tour de France and, consequently, a magnet for unfeasibly fit, annoyingly slim cycling fanatics, all lycra and expensive carbon racing bikes. If, like me, you occasionally like to demonstrate your own modest sporting prowess to the small people without collapsing from sunstroke and exhaustion, then Velo Relax de Ventoux in the pretty village of Villes sur Auzo is the place for you.
Their bikes come complete with a little electric engines that allowed me to pedal normally on the flat and then glide effortlessly up any hill, towing a squealing Scarlett & Fin along in a pull-along trailer. I got to enjoy the gorgeous Provence countryside non-red-faced, while maintaining (for a little while at least!) the kids’ illusion that Daddy could have been a sports contender.
For more info, contact Velo Relax du Ventoux, Le Cours, 84570, Villes sur Auzon, 00 33 490 11 72 65, www.velorelaxduventoux.com. Electric bikes cost €15/£13 per half day for hire.
