    Babasac 2-in-1 baby sleeping bag

It’ s never easy to transform our Northern European dress habits when we jump on the plane & head for hotter Southern climes. I always arrive at the airport in chilly March, clad in puffer jacket and gloves, totally unable to imagine that I’ll be comfortable in shorts and t-shirts in a few hours time.

When Scarlett & Fin were tiny, it was even tougher as we tried to gauge the best blankets and sleeping gear to manage a small baby’s notoriously cranky temperature controls. We’d always arrive to find all their favourite warm stuff was way too warm for life in the sun.

The new 2-in-1 multi-tog Babasac sleeping bag is a perfect way to cope with the sudden climate change. It was designed by mum Keira O’Mara, as a result of her frustration at having to buy a new, cooler baby sleeping gear to take on hols.

The Babasace comes with removeable inner panels that easily zip out and allow you to magically switch from a toasty 2.5 tog rating in the shivery UK to comfortable 1.0 tog at your destination.

It’s 100% cotton and available in two designs, pink hearts and navy stars. Available from May in 3 sizes (0-6, 6-18 and 18-36 months) from www.mamascarf.co.uk, it costs from £39.99.

    Martinhal, Portugal

Trampolining and lunch don’t leap to the mind as a natural partnership. Unless of course you are a holidaying parent of two small, hyper-active children who is longing to linger over a some decent seafood and a crisp white wine – just for once!

On the alfresco deck of As Dunal Restaurant, Jane & I kicked back over delicious calamari & salads as Scarlett, 8, and Fin, 5, bounced wildly to their hearts content on a trampoline just a few feet away. A cunningly-constructed kid compound, fenced and gated to stop escape bids, with a soft sand floor to avoid bouncy bumps proving too serious, was close enough to allow easy supervision (the inevitable cries of  ’Mum, Dad, look!’ can be fended off with a smile and a wave without leaving your seat) but not so close as to ruin your laidback lunchtime ambience.

It’s typical of the family-friendly thinking behind the rest of Martinhal, a fab new resort on the beautiful, less-developed west end of the Algarve. Effectively, a custom-built village sitting on a long white sand beach, Martinhal gazes toward the pretty fishing village of Sagres and then out across the startling blue of the Atlantic.

Smart, minimalist two-storey rooms, with self-catering kitchens, avoid the danger of being too grown-up with touches like scatterings of giant bean bags for the kids to flop. The Village Square (with a high-class deli for you) has a great helicopter themed playground and the Raposinhos (Fox) Club for 5-8 year olds is one of the best kids’ clubs we’ve come across anywhere. My usually-hesitant kids demanded daily sessions with strapping, smiling Hugo who was as willing to bake heart cookies with them as to play rough-and-tumble ball games. Even the elegant Finisterra Spa had a family friendly option – offering dad-and-son, or mum-and-daughter massage sessions which Scarlett and Jane loved.

A wonderful half-indoor, half-outdoor swimming pool was the scene of Fin’s triumphant entry into the world of the swimmer. He started the week still clinging to his armbands and ended it, Pro-style goggles firmly in place, confidently swimming entire widths underwater.

This was my first trip to Portugal. A week at Martinhal convinced me that it won’t be my last.

    Quicksmart Backpack Stroller

At last – a solution to the great buggy-on-the-plane nightmare that haunts every parent with a baby or a toddler. No more of those cold sweat moments in the arrivals hall, wondering whether your buggy will turn up on the carousel or if you’ll be forced to track down some surly bloke in a carefully-concealed office somewhere in the bowels of the building to get it back.

The Quicksmart Backpack Stroller weighs in at a super-light 9 pounds. But the really clever part is that it folds down in four quick moves into a backpack that all airlines will accept as hand luggage – and which fits neatly into overhead lockers. Bye, bye to check in or fears of losing it in transit.

There’s handle for tall dads, and an extra-high backrest to ensure junior gets plenty of comfort and support. It’s suitable for babies from six months old up to a child of 45 pounds. A retractable hood gives plenty of sun protection on the beach.

The stroller retails for £122.00. For more details, take a look at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quicksmart-Back-Pack-Stroller-Grey/dp/B005EQEAX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321442091&sr=8-1

    My All Grow’d Up Cup

I have a confession to make. For years, I was that dad. The one behind the wheel of a car, staring wildly ahead while frantically reaching around in the passenger footwell behind me with one hand, desperate to find the dropped sippy cup and thereby stop the hypersonic screaming from a furious & thirsty toddler.

Well, fellow dads (and mums), those days could be (mostly) over. My All Grow’d Up Cup is fun beaker that comes with a big holder that fixes to the car window with three super-strong suckers. Every time junior puts the colourful, elephant-eared cup back into the holder, it makes a comedy elephant sound.

Hey! Suddenly, it’s more fun to plop the cup back in the holder than it is to terrorise your parents by hurling it on the floor. So, fingers crossed (and not counting accidents and near-misses), the small person will be trained and motivated to do it again and again.

Inventor, mum of two Linzi Cracknell clearly grasps the full horror of Dropped Sippy Cup Syndrome. ‘I found myself at the traffic lights one morning, briefly taking my eyes off the road in order to reach around and pass my thirsty tot a drink,’ she says. ‘I realised that if I’d made that risky move, even once, then a million parents will have done the same. I made it my mission to come up with a safer solution!’

She has – and I like it. My All Grow’d Up Cup is dishwasher-proof, comes in Pink, Blue, Orange and Lime Green, and safe for tots older than 18 months. It retails for £12.99 and stockists include www.happyhollydaisy.com , Tesco, Amazon, Toys R Us, Halfords, Boots.com.

    Dream Tubes bed guard

Tots, holidays, and a strange new bed. All ingredients for increasing rather decreasing your travel stress levels. My partner Jane would be awake half a dozen times a night when our son Fin was a toddler, checking that he hadn’t flipped himself out of his unfamiliar hotel or resort sleeping place.

Dream Tubes could go some way to banishing fears about small people going bump in the night.

They are a set of inflatable tubes that blow up in seconds and then slot neatly into channels in a fitted sheet. The sheet itself then fits any standard single bed. Voila! Instant bumper guards to keep junior where he’s supposed to be all night.

The added attraction is that the whole thing is ultra-lightweight and folds up to a pack about the size of a beach towel. So, they’re not going to dominate our packing plans.

Oh, and the entire set is machine-washable – even a high temperatures – and you can get a a spare sheet for  £29.99 to allow for those little holiday – um – accidents!
Dream Tubes cost £44.99 for 100% cotton standard single bed set, £39.99 for 100% cotton
cot bed size set, £35.00 for new microfibre standard single bed set. All available from
    www.hippychick.com

    SnooziHedz travel pillow

So, we’ve arrived – the first day of the long, long school summer holidays has dawned. Now fatherly thoughts turn to ensuring that the plane journey to the longed-for sun-drenched beach does not have a sleepless, wildly-sobbing toddler as a soundtrack.

The SnooziHedz might be the answer. From the same clever team who brought us the Trunki suitcase, it’s essentially a 3-in-1 package for placating travelling small people.

Initially, it looks like a cute cartoon character pillow, good for cuddling in the pushchair or car seat on the way to the airport. Once on board, it unzips into an inflatable pillow and super-soft fleece blanket which should ensure your toddler feels safe and toasty enough to curl up on a seat and drift off to sleep by the time you hit cruising altitude and the seatbelt sign flashes off.

Available in pink or blue, SnooziHedz incorporates a nifty Trunki Grip ™ feature that knits the pillow and blanket into a secure whole to ensure little ones stay tucked up and warm no matter how much they wriggle around in their sleep

A polyester and cotton mix means the SnoozHedz – retailing at £19.99 – is machine washable in the event of the inevitable in-flight meal-based accident. For more details, visit www.trunki.co.uk/products/snoozihedz_12/snoozihedz_42

    Splasha beach robe

A camper van holiday has been high on the kids’ list of priorities for years, and this year we’ve finally caved in. So in August we’ll be off for a week to the Isle of Wight in VW Camper for a life on the open road, a world away from the comfort of en suite bathroom fluffy towels.

For that reason, I think a couple of Splasha beach robes will be the first things in our (very minimalist) luggage.

The scrummy-soft robes – which fit kids aged 1-7 – have sleeves and poppers to keep small people wrapped up and warm, and a big pocket on the front for keeping their shampoo and shower gel findable amid the holiday chaos. They double up as great towels when your brood emerge shivering from the sea or swimming pool.

They cost £19.95. For more info, take a look at from Morrck.co.uk

    Easy Rider in Provence

The imposing bulk of Mont Ventoux in Provence, 45 minutes drive from Avignon, is a regular stage on the Tour de France and, consequently, a magnet for unfeasibly fit, annoyingly slim cycling fanatics, all lycra and expensive carbon racing bikes.
If, like me, you occasionally like to demonstrate your own modest sporting prowess to the small people without collapsing from sunstroke and exhaustion, then Velo Relax de Ventoux in the pretty village of  Villes sur Auzo is the place for you.
Their bikes come complete with a little electric engines that allowed me to pedal normally on the flat and then glide effortlessly up any hill, towing a squealing Scarlett & Fin along in a pull-along trailer. I got to enjoy the gorgeous Provence countryside non-red-faced, while maintaining (for a little while at least!) the kids’ illusion that Daddy could have been a sports contender.
For more info, contact  Velo Relax du Ventoux, Le Cours, 84570, Villes sur Auzon, 00 33 490 11 72 65, www.velorelaxduventoux.com. Electric bikes cost €15/£13 per half day for hire.

    Donkey walking in Provence

Provence is not just about wine appreciation, beautiful architecture, and gourmet food (although of course it is about all of that too!). Oh no, it also offers the kid-pleasing possibilities of donkey walking.
Eric, genial owner of Le Petite Ferme, near Villes Sur Auzon, north of Avignon, may only speak halting English but he knew exactly how to win the hearts of my two, Scarlett & Fin. They were both knee-deep in baby goats, bunnies, pot-bellied piglets and assorted chicks within seconds of arrival.
But Junior, Eric’s amiable donkey, was our favourite. Saddled up to carry our bags and coats, he let my 4-year-old son and 7-yr-old daughter take turns leading him along the sun-dappled, butterfly-filled, sweet-smelling hill pathways around the farm for an hour, chomping occasionally on the baguette them offered him. He doubly endeared himself by nudging their mum into ditch at one point as he gently but firmly headed off-piste for a particularly tasty bunch of fresh grass.
If you’re really keen on the whole donkey-walking experience, Eric can organise a 10km expedition over three days, staying in auberges en route. For more info contact La Belle Combe, Chemin Fond, 84570, Villes Sur Auzon, 00 33 6 77

Guest Blog: New Dad at Haute Mancelière..

First-time Dad and former BBC Masterchef Professionals finalist, Ludo Dieumegard, tops off a trip back to his Brittany home-town with a relaxing break at Haute Manceliere

Once a year, ‘family duty’ calls with a visit the French wing of the clan. It is always whistle-stop  tour, cramming in as much quality time as possible with a long list of relatives, but this year the schedule was more packed that ever with a stream of uncles, aunties and cousins anxious to meet our  ‘not so new’ baby, Ella who arrived shortly after our last visit.

After a fortnight of crashing with various relations, we decided to treat ourselves to our first ‘family holiday’ and booked in to Haute Manceliere for a few nights.

Our stay at this pretty cluster of gites loomed like an oasis in the desert over our time in France and when we finally arrived, took in the lovely setting and opened the door, we  felt instantly relaxed and at home.  The interiors were a welcoming and comfortable mix of original Breton longhouse features with practical family furnishings that meant we weren’t constantly anxious about  grubby little hands on the sofas!

On further inspection, we barely needed to unload anything for Ella from the car as there was a cot (including a sleeping bag), stairgate, high chair, toys etc. all supplied.  We discovered a ‘kick and play’ gym for Ella to use along with three friendly rubber ducks for bath time.

Once we’d settled, Susan the owner popped over to see us. She was warm, friendly and brimming with useful tips and information about where to go.  We’d more or less written off a day trip to Le Mont St Michel as highly unpractical with a buggy, but no sooner had we mentioned it than Susan rustled up a baby ‘ruck sack’ seat for Ella.  So, we were able to spend a lovely half day wondering around Mont St Michel, climbing all the steps, wondering the tiny little cobbled streets and taking in the scenery without having to worry about lugging a buggy up steps.

We had a lovely time and although our timing (January) meant we couldn’t take full advantage of the extensive grounds and lovely looking swimming pool ,  we are now planning a return visit in warmer temperatures…. we just have to work out a way to get some time off from running a gastropub!

    Ludo Dieumegard

Dad of Ella (born 2010) and owner of Blaenwenllan Cottages & Ludo’s at the Cooper’s
