My Best Book About Me

I met Terese Oman, the Swedish designer and author of  My Best Book About Me, at the Bubble fair last month. She talked me through her stunning baby record book and it’s so fun and lovely that I was almost inspired to having another baby! There’s nothing like this out there on the market – a well-designed, modern and witty baby keepsake book that you can record the milestones of your child’s first five years. The book is colourful, packed with illustrations and the hallmarks of great Scandinavian design. Perfect for a gift for a new mother.

The Hexjibber Colouring and Activity Book

hexjibber

My kids are now at the age where they love colouring and activity books – although getting them to actually sit down and draw for longer than two minutes is a challenge. While I’m not anti the Ben 10 and Disney themed books my four year old begs for, I do want to encourage his creativity and spark his growing imagination so I like seeking out different arty activities he can do at home. So in my quest for cool colouring I came across the fantastically quirky and original Hexjibber Activity Book.

Created by the award-winning animator and illustrator Andy Sykes Hexjibber is a collection of uber-cool illustrations that will engage and inspire kids whatever artistic level they are at.  The simple black and white graphics appeal to all ages and I’ve enjoyed re-branding planet Earth as much as my son has had fun conjuring up a really scary sea monster and giggling his way around a cup-of-tea maze. Hexjibber is packed with dot-to-dots, mazes, games and lots of pictures to colour in and embellish. The ideas are simple and Andy brings everyday objects and situations to life in a witty and imaginative way.  So just get your crayons and felt tips at the ready and get scribbling.

Available from Amazon, £6

This is M. Sasek

sasek this is london

For budding little city travellers the ‘This Is…’ series of illustrated books by M Sasek are the perfect companions.
The books are written and illustrated by the Czech artist and illustrator Miroslav Sasek, who cleverly takes the reader on a wonderful and witty journey through the landmarks and life of the city.
Sasek’s first book ‘This is Paris’ was published in 1958, marking the beginning of the explosion of travel and holidaying abroad. He continued to cover 18 cities and places including London, New York and Hong Kong. His books have been reissued this century to the delight of many grand-parents who can remember them first time around.
Sasek picked up on the intricate detail and daily life of each city: the people, the clothes, transport and local minutiae such as shop signs and the famously long queues for London buses. The London book guides us through the parks, the squares, the river and jokes about the famous English gloomy weather.  The large pages and colourful illustrations and storylines captivate kids and adults alike and gives a fascinating insight into the cities in the 1960s.Sasek London Bus Queue

If you’re planning a trip to one of the cities Sasek covered, get yourself and the kids in the mood with one of his wonderful books. They would also make a perfect gift to any of your overseas friends. Price: £10.99 and available from good bookshops and Amazon.
