The wall to wall coverage of ‘Sam Cam’s’ pregnancy not only got me thinking about how the past, present and possibly future Prime Ministers have all had babies and toddlers in tow, but also about maternity fashions. Sam’s known for her ‘best First Lady style,’ so how will she work style and the all important need for comfort through her fourth pregnancy?
Pregnancy poses a basic fashion dilemma. You want your clothes to be comfortable with plenty of room for expansion, but that still look good. In my experience, it’s easy to find great, flattering tops to wear, but much of what’s available for the all important bottom half is often unflattering and dominated with polyester and viscose.
New on the maternity scene are Slacks & Co with their fabulously fitted trousers for fashionable mums-to-be. Dannii Minogue is said to be obsessed with hers and Denise Van Outen and Claudia Schiffer are fans. The leg-lengthening trousers come in brushed cotton and in skinny leg or bootleg styles. You can choose between a waistband that sits right above or right below the bump.
Slacks & Co have been created by fashionista Tara Meran. As with so many great products, it was Tara’s frustration about the lack of elegant, comfortable and flattering maternity trousers available during her own pregnancy that led her to design her own range. She’s created a range of wardrobe trouser staples that will see you through the 9 months and beyond. Prices from £126 to £165.

And if Sam’s Smythson Virginia is not roomy enough for all the nappies, she could trade in for a mamami the luxury baby change bag that handily hangs over the buggy.
