‘Wow’ will be the word that comes to mind as you pull up the track to this fabulous house in the bonnie Perthshire hills. The owners can only bear to part with their stunning holiday home for selected weeks of the year, making Alexander House an exclusive residence for family get togethers on a grand scale, sleeping 18-20 and offering a fantastic blend of grown-up elegance and fun facilities for children.
Gleaming and new, the house has been designed and decorated in 2009 to merge classic country manor and contemporary styling, with eco friendly systems for the heating and hot water. On the one hand you’ve got the sweeping staircases, chandeliered dining room and perfect period drawing room with a roaring fire. On the other, a wonderfully light and open plan kitchen, dining, living room is the ultimate sociable space and the buzzing heart of Alexander House. Here youngsters can lounge around on bean bags while meals are rustled up in the dream kitchen and while adults natter into the evening around the huge pine table or flopped on comfy leather sofas. You continue to live the life of luxury as you glide upstairs to the seven individually designed ensuite bedrooms with plenty of space for cots and a spacious ‘sleepover party’ children’s room with large bunk beds.
For families, perhaps the best thing about Alexander House is that it’s packed with leisure and pleasure pursuits, indoors and out. When the Scottish weather’s not so hot, there are two PS2 consoles and a games room with ¾ size snooker table and darts board. Outdoors, the 4 acres of grounds feature a heated pool with reassuring retractable cover, a hot tub, paddling pool and sand pit, mini swings and slides, ride-on toys, a trampoline with safety nets, football nets for playing 5-a-side and a croquet lawn with sets for both adults and children. Gaze on far reaching views to the Highlands from the terrace and enjoy bbq’s in the sheltered area at the rear with outdoor tables and chairs. Take a walk from the back door onto the heathery hills or to the local farm shop for home reared meat and Gail’s legendary homemade cakes – yum!

The beauty of Alexander House is that even from London you can really get away from it all really quite easily - by plane, train or car. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee airports are all within an hour away, the station at Gleneagles – yes that Gleneagles – is 10 minutes by car and the house is only 3 miles from Auchterader and the main A9 road. In snowy and icy Scottish winter months, a 4x4 is advisable.
The surrounding countryside is a natural adventure playground for all ages. Take your pick from horse riding, falconry, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, fishing and of course golf, with the Perthshire Green Card giving you access to a choice of 19 of the 18-hole courses, from £65 for 3 rounds. At Blair Castle, children can take the Detectives Challenge, get creative in the Treasury Room, clamber around the Adventure playground and ride on a tractor while at historic Scone Palace, they’ll love feeding the free roaming peacocks, meeting Highland cattle and Highland ponies.
The so-called ‘Lang Toon’ of Auchterader has a good selections of shops and restaurants including the 2 Michelin star Andrew Fairlie at the Gleneagles Hotel and Jon & Fernandes in the town itself but you’ll need to book well in advance. Another excellent and equally popular restaurant nearby is An Lochan at Tormaukin Hotel.
