The scrunching of waves on Deal’s pretty pebble beach is enough to soothe the most stressed out parents staying in the calming, comfort of 49 The Marina. Literally the toss of a pebble from the beach, the ground floor apartment is in a quiet, sought after location on the Victorian seafront and just a short, level stroll along the prom to Deal’s pier, pubs, shops and restaurants –including really scrummy fish and chips!
A Victorian property from the 1890’s, the owners have recently renovated the apartment in a tasteful, contemporary style yet maintaining period features including original fireplaces in every room and wedding cake cornicing. As a mum herself, Molly has also put considerable thought into making the house a fabulously baby and child friendly holiday home, from plug socket covers and high chairs to plenty of toys, books, games and DVD’s.
Three steps lead down from the seafront to the entrance of the apartment, with its pretty patio area and French doors adjacent. There’s also a sunny courtyard at the back that’s even better for eating al fresco, bbq’s and relaxing while toddlers safely play. Inside 49 The Marina, the owners have somehow captured a sophisticated seaside feel without resorting to obvious nautical themes. The muted, complimenting colours of the decor and furnishings make the house cool in summer and cosy in winter, while the spacious rooms mean children and grown ups don’t get under each other’s feet. The comfy lounge has a flat screen Freeview TV, DVD, stereo and Ipod dock, there’s wi fi throughout and the kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons, overlooking the courtyard garden.
A real plus point is that apartment is all on one floor, so no stair hazard or lugging gear up and down. The three bedrooms are spacious and luxurious, with supremely comfortable beds, Egyptian cotton linen, hypoallergenic bedding and fluffy white towels. Of the three large bedrooms, one can be a twin or Superking and two have king size beds with swish ensuite shower rooms featuring tactile pebble tiled power showers. There’s also a family bathroom with a double ended bath and pebble tiled power shower. With the sea air, fun family days on the beach and all the laid back seaside pleasures that Deal has to offer, everyone can look forward to serious R&R!

Just over an hour by high speed train from central London, 49 The Marina in Deal is ideal for a few days and longer by the sea on the Kent coast.
A scrunchy, crunchy pebble and shingle beach is right on the doorstep where youngsters will happily collect the smoothest, prettiest colours and strangest shapes as irresistible souvenirs. Small fishing boats are also pulled up onto the shore, loaded with the locals’ catch of the day and available for fishing trips – hardly surprising the local fish and chips is among the best ever tasted by guests staying at 49 The Marina and the shop will even deliver!
The centre of Deal is just a short buggy friendly walk along the promenade, renowned for its ¼ mile long ‘pier of the year’, winner of The Telegraph’s ‘Top 10 spots to lay your beach towel’ and a seaside town described as ‘the genuine Georgian article’. The quaint cobbled streets are full of pubs, restaurants and speciality shops for all kinds of gifts and goodies including handmade chocolates and Italian patisserie. Every Wednesday a farmers market of local produce takes place at the Town Hall and there are all kinds if bargains to be had at the bustling Saturday market in Union Road. Besides the beach, Deal has two castles built by Henry VIII, an intriguing ‘Time Ball Tower’ and two museums. Being so flat, the area is also easy for exploring on bikes, whether just pootling along the prom or doing the 7 mile route from Deal to Ringwould, recommended in The Times’ ‘Where to cycle by the sea’ and described as ‘short and sweet with a bit of everything’.
For a complete change of scene and to stock up on fine wines, Dover is also close by for a day trip to France.
